SYNOPSIS

The Discovery Adventures is a seven-episode binaural adventure podcast which puts you at the heart of the story. You are ‘Sam’, and together with your Uncle and his four-legged friend, you travel across the UK to solve the mysterious GPS disruptions that are causing nationwide chaos. The series was produced by CECILIA.FM with sound by Tony and Olivier award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry (Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, David Bowie is, London Olympic Games) and features the best British vocal talent including Natalie Dormer ( Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, Captain America), Hugh Skinner (Fleabag, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mamma Mia 2), Sophie Thompson (Harry Potter, Eat Pray Love), Alexander Armstrong (Dr Who, The Imitation Game), and BBC News anchor Kate Silverton. The podcast takes you across the British countryside, where you get help from some of the nation’s best-known outdoor experts (Chris Packham, Neil Oliver, Prof. Alice Roberts, Tristan Gooley, Prof. Lucie Green, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Sir Ben Ainslie) to save the country from a clandestine threat. This unique mix of fact and fiction creates engaging stories that parents and kids alike can enjoy, prompting lively discussions and treasured memories.

We ended up having to listen to episode after episode, moving from the car to the kitchen when we got home. The best bit was watching our boy Fred just lying on the floor and listening. He’s six, he never does this.

CASE STUDY

SOUND

This is the first ever binaural adventure podcast, so naturally sound was paramount to the production. We made our podcast more like a film rather than an ad or radio production, mostly recorded on location. We use binaural sound and ambisonic sound, key technologies to VR and 360 experiences, to enrich the existing medium of podcasts and enhance the listening experience. Binaural content is best enjoyed with headphones or in relatively confined spaces (like a car), and allows us to feel part of the story, be part of the action, and authentically feel like we’re ’there’.

Recording binaurally gives us a real sense of panorama, landscape, and our place within it. However, binaural microphones pick up each and every sound around us, including unwanted ambient sounds such as jet planes, traffic, clothes rustling, etc. This presented a unique set of challenges for the production in order to honor the immersive natural experience for the listener, creating an almost VR first-person perspective, whether it be your Uncle’s dog licking your ear, clambering up a tree in Savernake forest or repelling down a cave in Cheddar Gorge.

Music also plays a prominent role and features a soundtrack by UK hip-hop legend Roots Manuva and in-demand music producer FRED (Ellie Goulding, Brian Eno), who put a fresh spin on a rare and fascinating British instrument called the Skiddaw Stones to further celebrate the British heritage in our story.

ABOUT

Research shows that families aren’t spending enough time together any more, with children spending half of their waking lives in front of a screen. That’s 7.5 hours every day. In addition, children are losing their connection with the outdoors, leading to an increase in obesity, vitamin D deficiency* and mental health issues**.

But there is one place where families still spend time together - the car. As adults are important role models for childrens' experiences, attitudes and habits with the natural environment, we saw an opportunity to create a positive screenless experience that our core audience of young families could share. One that encouraged them to get out and explore the UK countryside, together.

We transformed cars into immersive audio theatres, putting the Discovery’s capability for adventure at the heart of the drama, without the need for overt branding. For example, without any mention of the brand, we demonstrate off-road excellence by taking our characters across the bogs of Dartmoor and highlight the wade sensing system by crossing the sea to St. Michael’s Mount, Cornwall.

Land Rover presents ‘The Discovery Adventures’, a mystery-drama podcast series for families, set in some of the UK’s most extraordinary places. It was recorded using binaural sound to immerse our audience in an atmospheric adventure, whatever car they are driving.

IMPACT

●      The story is engaging, fun, and educational - 75% of the audience listened through to the end of each 15 minute episode.

●     Research suggests that listening with others to oral storytelling creates a virtual world that can offer personal and significant connections, allowing listeners to add their own imagination and emotions to the story and make the experience bi-directional and interactive.

●      The format of the story is also innovative as it mixes fact and fiction to create an exciting mystery drama. It appeals to both children and adults, giving them conversation topics for their car journey and lots of suggestions for great outdoor activities when they reach their destination.

●      Over 500,000 listens since the series launch at the end of 2017, reaching Number 1 in  iTunes family podcasts.
